Gorges du Verdon
If you dream of turquoise water and splendid landscapes, head for the south of France and go to the Gorges du Verdon! Stretching across the departments of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence where our campsite l'Hippocampe in Volonne is located and the Var, this canyon carved out by the Verdon river is breathtaking. Venture into one of France's most popular tourist destinations.
A breathtaking Grand Canyon in the heart of Provence
A Grand Canyon is a natural formation of peaks separated by a depth of some 1,600 m. In Europe and more particularly in Provence, we have the Grand Canyon of the Gorges du Verdon which is coloured green and humidified thanks to the presence of two lakes.
The Gorges du Verdon begins at an altitude of almost 2,819 metres at the Col d'Allos, then covers a distance of approximately 175 km between cliffs and rivers. There are many viewpoints to take great shots. The opportunities to immortalise a scene on the cliffs that criss-cross the Gorges are endless.
What activities are there in the Gorges du Verdon?
Visiting the Gorges du Verdon also means enjoying water sports activities on the Esparron and Montmeyan lakes. The first, Lac d'Esparron, was artificially created and is now an aquatic recreation centre that attracts many diving enthusiasts every year. Lac de Montmeyan, on the other hand, has a calm atmosphere that's perfect for exploring and fishing. You can enjoy pedal-boat rides or opt for a canoe trip for the more adventurous.
However, walking is still the best way to discover the immensity of the Gorges. Don't be content with the most popular tourist spots, as the Verdon is full of surprises for those with a keen eye.
