History buffs will appreciate that Sisteron is set on the banks of the Durance river, along the Napoleon Route, which the famous figure followed on his return from Elba. Stroll through the narrow streets between heritage houses, staircases, fountains .... and let yourself be charmed by this magnificent village and its citadel perched on a rocky spur.
Tourism in Sisteron
The crowning glory of Sisteron is undoubtedly its citadel (which you can also see at night with the "Nuits de la Citadelle à Sisteron" festival). The citadel is perched on a rock and offers a circuit of new discoveries. Tourists can enjoy unobstructed views over the whole town and especially over the Durance. Sisteron's cathedral, small prison, magnificent buildings with medieval and modern architecture, museums and the whole ensemble constitute a real tourist circuit amidst a theatre of greenery.
Between the citadel (where the "Nuits de la Citadelle" festival also takes place) and the Durance River lies the old town, a district that bears witness to Sisteron's glorious past. This part of the commune perfectly traces the history of the region. Steep streets, rigid houses, medieval walls, small fountains, old convents and commercial streets are among the discoveries to be made here. In summer, take advantage of the small tourist train to visit the old town and to take you to the heights of the town and the citadel.
If you are looking for the joys of walking and hiking, the "route du temps" is not to be missed.
The commune of Sisteron is bursting with sights. If you choose to spend a holiday or a weekend here, there are many places to visit, including:
- The Tour de l'Horloge: this medieval tower is known for its engraved motto which speaks of the safety between the mountains and the rivers and aims to reassure visitors. In 1892, the tower was rebuilt and a clock was added as well as a bell tower.
- The Church of Saint Dominique: it is located near the Baume Rock. In summer, several events and concerts are organised here.
- Longue-Andrône: in Provence, andrône means stairway, and there are many of these in Sisteron.
You can also visit other places like the Cathedral Notre-Dame-des-Pommiers-et-Sainte-Thyrse or the Porte d'Ornano.

The Rocher de la Baume, the Gorges de la Méouge and the Grotte du Trou de l'Argent are natural wonders of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, presenting a fascinating picture of geological beauty and untouched nature.
The Rocher de la Baume, near our campsite, is the focal point of Sisteron. This immense rock face consists of vertical layers that have been compressed. This gives this rock formation its rather unusual appearance. The steep cliffs are used as climbing walls, so it is not uncommon to see people hanging from the rock face. Not far from here, the Gorges de la Méouge offer a unique water experience. The Méouge River winds its way through impressive gorges, offering visitors the chance to swim. The turquoise water contrasts beautifully with the red cliffs and lush green forests, creating a breathtaking landscape.
The Grotte du Trou de l'Argent, near Sisteron, is a challenging hike, with 680 metres of climbing. The reward is well worth the effort, with a breathtaking finish that literally merges into the rock, before offering remarkable views over the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence.
