The Citadelle of Sisteron is an impressive example of military architecture, dating back to the 13th century. It was designed to protect the town of Sisteron from the invasions and conflicts that have marked the history of the Alpes-de-Hautes-Provence region. Strategically built on the route from the Alps to the Mediterranean, this fortress is a true jewel of medieval engineering, with its imposing stone walls, deep moat, watchtowers and massive keep. Sisteron's citadel offers spectacular panoramic views over the Alps and the Durance valley. History buffs will be delighted by the wealth of architectural details and exhibits that tell the story of the citadel's eventful history.

Visitors will have plenty of time to wander around the terraced gardens that adorn the fortress, where colourful flowerbeds, fountains and sculptures create an enchanting setting. The panorama of the ramparts, where the waters of the Durance reflect the citadel, is one of the most photographed views in the region.
